Years and years of pounding the key on the keyboard and designing for the web before there was a Google. Many of these brands paid for advertising in the Yellow Pages. Many of them didn't really even know what the internet was or how it could be useful. However, in every instance I needed to build enough trust for them to pay me for solving their business problems when they thought I was creating art. Teaching them that design could be used as an effective competitive advantage rather than a sunk cost. Many of these clients "got it" and for those who embraced design saw their bottom line soar.
